Central Kalahari GR Sightings

We've visited the Central Kalahari around Christmas in 2010 during the early rains. Wildlife sightings depend highly on the season. The Letiahau area (Deception Valley) is definitely the best place to visit. The rainy season starts in December and runs until about March. Despite the huge rain, this is in our opinion the best time to visit the Kalahari. The first grass sprouts color the desert beautiful green and attract huge herds of mammals and predators. Especially the beautiful pans are perfect for great sightings of interaction between predator and prey.

Thoughts about Central Kalahari GR

Approximately 175 km south of Maun, in the middle of Botswana lies the Central Kalahari GR, one of the most distant parks we have ever seen. The area is characterized by vast sand plains and the 'pans', vast valleys where wildlife gathers. This is not an area where you just go in and stay. You are all on yourself and the outside world sometimes seems very far away. You have to take enough fuel, food and wood with you, before you visit the park. A 4x4 is an absolute necessity.

Most tourists stay in a handful of camp sites around Deception Valley (Letiahau).

The Kalahari has a reputation of brown hyenas. The main reason is the study of these animals by Mark and Delia Owens in the '70s and early '80s. Unfortunately we haven´t seen these animals.
